Neuropathic Pain: Cause

Description: The sensation of pain results from adverse physical or emotional experiences that cause actual or perceived tissue damage. The most common pain sensation, nociceptive pain, results from physical tissue damage, which is experienced through the nervous system. A second type of pain, neuropathic pain, stems from a malfunction in the central and/or peripheral nervous system. Because its source is internal, neuropathic pain may lack an obvious origin. This course discusses the pathophysiology and epidemiology of neuropathic pain.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students completing this course should be able to:
  • List five diseases that can cause neuropathic pain
  • Describe the four steps involved in the body's pain perception process: transduction, transmission, modulation, and perception
  • Describe the three mechanisms researchers have proposed to explain how neural injury causes neuropathic pain
  • Explain that diabetic neuropathy and postherpetic neuropathy are the two most common types of neuropathic pain
  • Estimate the prevalence of different types of neuropathic pain
